Project Highlight: Confederation College

Confederation College, located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, is home to over 7,000 students annually. With a wide range of programs from interactive media development to aerospace engineering, Confederation College needed a robust, multi-purpose space to use as their main lecture theatre. To fulfill this, they enlisted the help of Evolution AV to design and build audio visual systems for the Dibaajimogamig Lecture Theatre.

The AV Systems

We’ve built this theatre as a true multipurpose space—for lectures, live events, and film screenings. We’ve installed a full streaming system for hybrid classes and recording lectures. Three motorized PTZ cameras have been installed around the lecture theatre. Using these 3 motorized cameras as well as a streaming encoder from Newtek, lectures and events can be recorded and broadcast on nearly any platform, or recorded for students to watch later.

The theatre was also specified to provide an excellent cinematic experience. To achieve this goal, we installed a Barco Series 4 projector as well as a Dolby Cinema audio processor. The Barco projector features a modular design with toolless filter changes, keeping maintenance costs low while providing fantastic video quality and brightness. QSC Theatre speakers have been installed throughout the theatre as well as subwoofers, providing high quality surround sound and a fantastic cinematic experience.

For recording audio, a Shure wireless microphone system has been installed with a variety of microphones, including headsets for lecturers and handheld microphones for Q&A sessions. This system uses a QSYS signal processor for automatic echo and feedback cancellation, integrated with the theatre’s control system for easy volume control and microphone muting. This control system lets lecturers and technicians control the AV systems from the lectern or the projection room, using networked control panels. The theatre also features a Listen Technologies Assistive Listening system, providing fantastic accessibility for students and patrons with hearing loss and creating an inclusive learning environment. This system supports both induction loop hearing aids, and
